Vodafone Launches SmartPass NFC Payments in Germany

Vodafone-Germany-SmartPass-NFC-payments-rfid-blogVodafone Germany has launched its Vodafone SmartPass NFC mobile payment app in the city of Düsseldorf and plans to expand the service across the country during the first quarter of 2014.

The news follows the commercial launch of the service in Spain last month. Rollouts are also due to take place in the Netherlands, UK and Italy in spring 2014.

Customers need a certified NFC phone and an NFC-enabled SIM card. They can then charge purchases at any Visa contactless terminal to a prepaid Vodafone SmartPass account. Customers without an NFC phone can attach a SmartPass NFC sticker to their device.

“We have created the best possible conditions for ensuring that mobile payment can soon be entirely integrated into everyday life for everyone,” says Frank Vahldiek, director of consumer services and innovations at Vodafone Germany.

“To achieve this, we started by setting a low barrier to entry. With our flexible range of services comprising NFC SIM cards and stickers, every mobile phone can be fitted with the contactless function.”

Vodafone and Orange to launch NFC payments in Spain

Both Vodafone and Orange are to launch NFC payments services using prepaid cash accounts in Spain this year.

Vodafone has announced that all its customers will be able to use Vodafone SmartPass to make mobile payments from a Visa prepaid card account at over 250,000 stores across Spain by the end of 2013.

Customers with an NFC phone will be able to add a Vodafone SmartPass app to their device. Those without will be offered a contactless sticker that can be attached to their phone for safe keeping.

Vodafone also hopes to incorporate credit and debit cards from other financial institutions in 2014, as well as adding discount coupons and loyalty programs to the service.

“Vodafone SmartPass assumes the next step in the revolution of smartphones because it allows our customers to benefit from the simplicity, safety, speed and convenience of managing their day-to-day transactions by just having their phone,” says Iñaki Cabrera, director of m-commerce at Vodafone Spain.

Orange, meanwhile, has announced that it will launch its Orange Cash service in Spain, in conjunction with MasterCard, during the fourth quarter of 2013. Customers will be able to make payments via NFC using a prepaid Orange Cash account that can be topped up from an existing credit card. A physical card will also be available for customers without an NFC phone.

Italian Bank Partners with Vodafone to Test NFC Payments Service

Banca-Mediolanum-Vodafone-trial-NFC-payments-rfid-blogItalian financial services company Banca Mediolanum is working with mobile network operator Vodafone Italia to run a pilot in Milan to test NFC mobile payments.

All 60 consumers involved are equipped with a Samsung Galaxy S III handset, pre-loaded with the bank’s mobile payment application, and containing an NFC SIM card provided by Vodafone.

The app, developed by the bank in partnership with technology infrastructure and service provider SIA, is linked to a MasterCard prepaid card issued by the bank, called InMediolanum Conto Carta.

Payments are deducted from the prepaid card account whenever a consumer makes a payment using their mobile phone at any contactless POS terminal. The trial is due to run until the commercial launch of the new mobile payments service, expected in early 2014.

“The trial is taking place in Milan but we have had transactions also outside of Milan and outside Italy; some of our trialists tried the service outside the country, in England and the US.” said Banca Mediolanum.

“The test has a double purpose; to test the new service from the technical point of view and from an experiential one, in order to collect qualitative feedback to understand properly the user experience and to position Banca Mediolanum among the first movers in Italy in the mobile payments service.”

“During the first weeks of trial we have collected over 600 successful NFC transactions in over 200 different merchants, in Italy and outside of it.”
