Dutch Bank to Launch NFC Payments in the Netherlands

Netherlands-Rabobank-NFC-payments-rfid-blogDutch bank Rabobank is going to commercially launch an NFC mobile payments service in the Netherlands next year. Rabobank customers will be able to apply for a payment card online and have it sent securely over-the-air to their NFC phone by technology provider Giesecke & Devrient, which is acting as the bank’s trusted service manager (TSM).

Rabobank is still in the process of deciding on whether to use an NFC SIM card or a phone’s embedded secure element to store customer’s payment credentials.

The bank has been testing NFC payments as part of a group pilot project with other Dutch banks in the city of Leiden. That trial has now been extended to run until January 1st, 2014, following a higher than expected uptake of the service with 15,000 transactions being made in the trial’s first 90 days and the number of participating merchants rising to 250.

Far EasTone Launches Low-cost Android NFC Smartphone in Taiwan

Taiwan-Far-EasTone-Vodafone-Android-NFC-smartphone-rfid-blogMobile network operator Far EasTone has teamed with Vodafone to launch a low-cost Android NFC smartphone in Taiwan in preparation for its NFC payments pilot later this year.

Far EasTone has already purchased some 10,000 units of the Vodafone Smart III handset, reports Focus Taiwan, which will retail at NT$4,990 (US$166) when it goes on sale later this month.

“We are likely to see more mid- to entry-level NFC phones available in the market in the future,” says Far EasTone president Yvonne Li. “But it will take some time because these phones have to be built in accordance with certain technological standards and complete many security tests.”

The launch is a push towards the carrier’s NFC payments project, which will start with a trial period for employees of the Far EasTone Group at the end of July, adds Li.

Far EasTone says it will purchase between 1.7m and 1.8m smartphones this year, with half of these being NFC-enabled.

Auckland NFC Transport Trial Enters Next Phase

Auckland-NFC-trial-rfid-blogTelecom, Westpac and Auckland Transport have announced the next phase of their NFC mobile wallet trial on Auckland’s public transport system.

An NFC-capable phone is used to pay for fares on a train platform. More than 30 trail participants in Auckland will use Samsung Galaxy S III phones to pay for journeys on trains and ferries.

However, there was no news about the availability on Auckland buses, which according to Auckland Transport have the highest public transport patronage in Auckland, with almost 55 million trips expected this year.

Telecom says in future the system will be available as an alternative point-of-sale payment method akin to EFTPOS, or contactless credit cards. In addition, the telco expects it to be used as a coupon and rewards system.

The trial is a collaboration between Auckland Transport, Westpac Bank, Telecom, Gemalto, Thales, and Paymark. According to the joint venture, its mobile wallet technology will be available towards the end of 2013.
