Visa Preparing for “Mainstream Launch” of NFC Mobile Payments in UK

Visa-UK-NFC-launch-rfid-blogIt is reported that Visa is working with mobile operators Telefónica and Vodafone in the UK, as well as banks and Android device makers, in preparation for a “mainstream launch” of NFC mobile payments, along with a cloud-based digital wallet called V.me.

Visa, which has announced plans to expand its acceptance of contactless payment, predicted that the UK will have 34 million contactless Visa-branded cards on issue and 175,000 contactless terminals deployed by the end of 2013.

Mark Austin, Visa Europe’s head of contactless, stated that contactless transactions topped 2.5 million per month in 2012 and predicted a fourfold increase in 2013, fueled in large part by such major retailers as Boots, Marks and Spencer and McDonalds supporting contactless, as well as Transport for London.

In December, the transit authority began accepting payment of fares on 8,500 London buses from contactless bank cards. Transport for London reportedly plans to expand open-loop fare collection to the London Underground and Dockland Light Railway next November.

The launch of the open-loop service on buses had been planned for launch in time for the Olympics, but was delayed, with the authority citing complexities in rolling out the service. Accepting bank cards directly to pay fares on the fast-paced Underground, or Tube, is even more complex, so delays are likely.

    Mobile-World-Congress-mobile-payment-NFC-rfid-blog

This year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) will be held at Fira Gran Via in Barcelona, Spain, from Feb. 25th to 28th.

CaixaBank, Gemalto, Telefónica and Visa Europe have partnered to offer 3,500 delegates attending the MWC a Sony Xperia NFC phone equipped with a mobile payments application, which will allow delegates to make mobile contactless payments using a prepaid card issued by MoneyToPay, a new mobile payments service created by CaixaBank.

The app will come pre-loaded with €15, allowing delegates to make payments at contactless terminals across the Fira Gran Via venue as well as any of the 16,000 Visa contactless payment terminals located in stores and markets around Barcelona. 700 local taxis have also been equipped to accept NFC payments.

The payments service forms part of the GSMA’s NFC Experience for the Mobile World Congress, which will see a series of NFC zones and touch points being set up at the show venue as well as at the airport, key hotels, selected restaurants and central tourist locations.

G&D’s Worldwide TSM Services Get Approval from Visa

GD-TSM-Visa-MasterCard-nfc-mobile-payment-rfid-blogAccording to Visa, it has approved the TSM (Trusted Service Manager) centers, operated by Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) in Munich and Toronto, for commercial NFC applications. The technology group has previously received MasterCard certification for its two TSM hubs last year, and now it is offering worldwide TSM services for contactless payment applications based on

After a series of tests had been carried out on critical security features and functions, Visa finally issued its approval for it. The G&D data center in Munich was already running pilots via the Visa payWave payment application. With the approval by Visa, G&D will be able to offer service providers the option of having the Visa payWave payment application installed, personalized, and managed Over-the-Air (OTA) in protected memory devices, such as mobile-phone SIM cards or embedded secure elements. As to account data and other sensitive information, they are transmitted in multiple-encrypted form.

Once the service has been activated, end-users can use their mobile phones to make contactless payments at several hundred thousand merchant contactless terminals around the world.

With two separate but interlinked data centers — one in Munich and the other in Toronto, G&D can guarantee service providers uninterrupted access even if one of the centers should encounter technical problems.

French Telco Released Pre-paid Contactless Card

SFR-MasterCard-pre-paid-contactless-card-rfid-blogFrench wireless operator Paycard SFR is going to issue a pre-paid cash card to customers, as a first step to the introduction of contactless mobile payments and NFC.

The pre-paid cash card is priced at €14.90 and valid for one year. It does not require opening a bank account and can be recharged by cash, credit card or by bank transfer free.

Developed in conjunction with MasterCard, the contactless card can be used at PayPass terminals in-store for “tap and go” payments alongside conventional point-of-sale terminals, and for card-to-card transfers between friends and family. The card comes with a mobile app that provides real-time transaction data on balances and withdrawals.

MasterCard and SFR signed an agreement in July to develop a contactless NFC SIM card for fully-fledged mobile payments. SFR says it will start issuing its first NFC-ready SIM cards in 2013.
