    New York City Taxis to Get NFC-enabled Interactive Media Screens 

    VOGUE-New-York-City-taxis-NFC-interactive-screens-rfid-blogRecently, taxis in New York City are featuring an NFC interactive mobile campaign which is part of a national rollout available in taxicabs in several cities — including Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, Philadelphia and Anaheim. Thousands of media screens, embedded with NFC tag made with NXP Semiconductor’s NTAG203 chip, are featured in the cabs.

    The technology was initially piloted in New York City taxis during this past summer by Vogue, and will allow for interaction with local content and advertising campaigns this fall. Users were directed to “tap” or “scan” the screen for additional exclusive content.

    Utilizing NFC and QR code technology, users were instantly able to view exclusive mobile content, share Vogue’s video with friends via social-media sites (Twitter and Facebook) and subscribe to the magazine’s digital edition with a special offer. Of those who interacted, more than 21% shared the campaign with friends via social media and e-mail.

    In the new campaign, passengers will be able to tap their NFC-enabled smartphones to instantly download rich user content including music, videos, mobile applications, promotional information, coupons, maps, and so on. Consumers without an NFC-enabled phone will be able to scan the QR code to access the same content.

    Restaurant in Poland Tries NFC Table Stands 

    Masala-NFC-table-stands-rfid-blogAn Indian restaurant in Wroclaw, Poland, has deployed NFC-enabled table stands and NFC stickers from the local NFC specialist NFC Group.

    When customers tap the NFC tags embedded in the “table tent” stands with their smartphone or tablet, they are directed to a landing page, where they can find out more about the Masala Grill & Bar or “like” the restaurant’s Facebook page.

    NFC Group’s Karol Skraba said that although the technology is still little known in Poland, the company had seen an encouraging amount of interactions at the venue.

    Think & Go Adds NFC to Video Screen 


    Think & Go NFC has launched Dynamic NFC-Screen, a combined video display and smart poster that enables consumers to interact with promotional and informational videos.

    The display includes a series of dynamically changeable NFC tags, with which marketers can enable consumers to use NFC phones to collect coupons, download content, navigate through advertising media and add products to a mobile shopping basket.

    The patent-pending Dynamic NFC-Screen contains a matrix of dynamic NFC tags that are driven by the same computer that provides the video content. The number of tags that can be included depends on the size of the screen.

    “Because the communication is bidirectional, screens can track what’s happening (who is doing what, when and where), there’s no need for 3G or Wi-Fi to exchange data between screen and the user and the screen delivers big data back to a dashboard.” says Think & Go.

    Coupons could be hidden in interactive games or questionnaires and can also become dynamic, changing value with time or according to the profile of the individual consumer, Think & Go suggests. Consumers could also use the technology to navigate through a product catalogue and directly order products that are presented.

    The technology was shown at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. A small number of Dynamic NFC-Screens will be available in Q2 2013 with production quantities planned for Q4 2013.

    Surface Labs Introduces NFC Interactive Bar 

    NFC-interactive-bar-rfid-blogMulti-touch display specialist Surface Labs International (SLI) is demonstrating an NFC-enabled interactive bar at Mobile World Congress 2013.

    The bar counter is equipped with 3D projectors and tracking equipment to give an interactive experience that can include visual effects, videos and web pages. “The interactive bar is perfect for bars and clubs,” says SLI. “It is also brilliant for exhibitions, product launches and parties.”

    The next generation unit on display also incorporates an NFC payment solution, developed with mobile network operator EMT, that demonstrates how customers can order drinks from the bar — or, in a retail context, choose services provided by a mobile operator — and pay for them by just placing their NFC phone on the countertop.

    Samsung Promotes NFC with Galaxy Pop-up Store in Hong Kong 

    Samsung is promoting the NFC S-Beam capabilities of its Galaxy smartphones with a smart poster-based store-within-a-store in Hong Kong.


    The Galaxy Pop-Up Store concept was developed by Hong Kong-based mobile and NFC specialist Aigens and has been installed at Samsung’s retail outlets at Harbor City and Time Square in Hong Kong.


    “While looking like an ordinary poster, Galaxy Pop-up Store provides much more interactivity to engage users,” says Aigens. “Users can retrieve interactive contents such as Hi-Def movies or a full music album by simply tapping their NFC phones to the pop-up store”.
