RFID cargo ship monitoring system

The opening of Shanghai Expo 2010 just around the corner, at 24th March, Zhejiang Province where near Shanghai, issued the first inland waterway RFID access card (RFID access card) to the owner of “Jiashan 1322” cargo ship.

Zhejiang is the south gate of Shanghai, There is a total of 17 water route and 6 sea route between Zhejiang and Shanghai. The Expo Park is located at both sides of Huangpu River which runs through Shanghai city, over thousand ships entering and leaving Port of Shanghai everyday from Zhejiang with products of coal, hazardous chemicals, building materials etc. With a considerable part of those ships needs to approach the Expo core control zone, to establish this RFID cargo ship monitoring system is not only for the security issue, but also a more cost-effective approach.

This RFID access card is about credit card size and normally posted on the inside windscreen of cab. At present, Zhejiang local government is already installed many RFID readers on the side of northern waterway. When a cargo ship with RFID access card approaching, the ship and the cargo information, navigation routes, crew information will be transmitted to the monitoring system.

“This is like the ship installed with a bar code, we can have their information without to stop them. This really will save a lot of time for us.” said from a local officer.
